Aspen Invitational 2022 - Thank you!

A huge thank you to all of the sponsors, donors, volunteers, pros, riders and event coordinators that made the 2022 Aspen Invitational our best yet. More than ever before, we truly felt the sense of community and the passion behind the cause that brings us together to ride in Aspen. There is real progress being made in bringing clean water to the entire country of Zambia, and you are a significant part of it!

This was Brake the Cycle’s first Aspen Invitational as a 501c3, and we are so grateful for the participation and support from our implementing partner, World Vision. It was an honor to welcome back Dr. Greg Allgood and Kathryn Compton, but this year was made extra special by the attendance of Maybin Ng’ambi, Head of Water Engineering for World Vision in Zambia.  This was Maybin’s first time ever in Aspen, and he completed the entire 100k ride with us to show the determination that exemplifies his commitment to finishing the job in his home country.

We were also thrilled to debut several new events over the weekend. On Friday, there was an afternoon tea graciously hosted by the Wojcik's where attendees has the chance to learn more about our work in a much more intimate setting. The Friday registration and dinner (shout out to Chef & Pro Greg Pent for an amazing dinner) at the Appleby's was the perfect setting to mingle with the pros and connect before Saturday’s ride.

And last but certainly not least, this year board member Allison Mangelsen knocked it out of the park (pardon the pun) with a kids’ event that took place while the riders were out on the road and trails. Approximately 40 kids and parents had an absolute blast while also learning through different activities why we are riding, and how kids in Zambia need clean water just like them. Some of the kids were so inspired they held a lemonade stand the very next day to raise money for Brake the Cycle.  How cool is that - the next generation is ready to make a difference!

Our legs may have stopped spinning, but the momentum from this event is still going full force.  We are beyond excited to announce our goal for the rest of 2022. For every $125,000 raised we can provide a complete running water system for a healthcare facility including a maternity ward. The incredible opportunity is we have two matching donors resulting in 3 water systems for 3 facilities. These medical care facilities are lifesaving in communities that previously did not have access to safe healthcare with wash stations and clean water. This means mothers will have a birth center with a much higher survival rate than ever before.

Let's finish the job!

All the best,

The Brake the Cycle Family

Know the facts:

  • $50 provides clean water for one person for a lifetime.

  • $15,000 provides a hand pump well that serves a community of 300 people.

  • $50,000 provides a mechanical well that serves a community of 1000 people.

  • $125,000 provides one healthcare facility.

Understand the opportunity:

TRIPLE YOUR IMPACT. $125,000 raised this year for a healthcare water system will be matched 2:1 resulting in 3 total healthcare water systems provided. Learn more.

Trust our partnership:

Our implementing partner is World Vision, the world's largest provider of clean water. As experts and natives of Zambia, they bring critical knowledge of and sensitivity to the local culture and customs. With nearly 700 World Vision employees in Zambia they are uniquely equipped to help us achieve our goals and change lives to those in need.

Every day nearly 1,000 children die from disease caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation and unsafe hygiene practices. The search for clean water is an arduous task. But this is a problem that can be solved in our lifetime.
